Ashley Fitzwilliams

Ashley Fitzwilliams, along with Kurt Altman of Altman Law and Policy, defended veterinarian Mackenzie Kurth and Queen Creek Veterinary Clinic in one of the most interesting complaints encountered in our public records search. Fitzwilliams once worked at the same Goldwater Institute as Altman and now works alongside him at his law firm. She also previously worked as a deputy county attorney at none other than the Maricopa County Attorney's Office (link).

In 2020 a dog was boarded at Queen Creek Veterinary Clinic by a retired detective and his spouse. When they returned to pick up the dog they learned the dog was in poor condition and having difficulty walking. The dog was subsequently euthanized. Evidence suggested the dog was left to deteriorate by the veterinary personnel at the clinic, and the retired detective put together his findings.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office began to investigate and eventually charged Kurth with animal neglect based in part on the recommendation of their contracted veterinarian, Bernard Mangone. Once the case was handed off to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office the retired detective learned that there was an insufficient appetite to actually prosecute the case, being told in part that Kurth had found very good legal representation.

The retired detective subsequently filed a complaint with the veterinary board using the public police reports as supporting evidence. The Board also decided to find no wrongdoing.

It is suggested that Kurth ended up filing a complaint against the charging officer.
